Enclosed Spaces?

Actually there’s nothing constrained or enclosed about ‘Enclosure’, located within a stone’s throw of Goldsmiths in SE14.

Founded by architect Mark Dyson and designer Monika Petrowski, ‘Enclosure’ is a collaborative venture incorporating architecture and interior design, and which evolved originally to coordinate the project work of the ‘Hive’ design studio.

From 2001 onwards ‘Enclosure’ has operated as an independent limited company and has become involved in an increasing number of residential and commercial projects.

Far from being ‘enclosed’ by its origins the consultancy has ‘earned its spurs’ maturing from re-modelling old houses and designing extensions and loft conversions to new build projects and more substantial commissions such as semi-detached villas and excursions into the ‘cultural sector’ with photographic and ceramics studios.

And, as they’ve expanded their range of projects so work has arrived from ‘further afield’ such as the heady climes of Hampstead/Highgate.

They remain however committed to their local roots and maintain over 50% of business from around Deptford/New Cross/Brockley/Nunhead.

Do they have a point-of-difference?  Mark ventures into ‘art-speak’, talking about ‘coded narratives’ and fusing ‘furniture, appliances and lighting’ into a ‘furnitechture’ of design, clearly alluding to the beneficial collaborative effect of designers and architects working in harmony to add value to their spatial solutions.

But it’s the narratives, the ‘storylines’ that excite – aiming to incorporate an individual ‘aspect’ of each owner’s interest or lifestyle into every structure.

A fine example is the Myatt Garden School project where Enclosure involved all 435 pupils in workshops to help give them real ‘ownership’.

“After all”, says Mark, “it’s their school”.

Apart from general learning from the workshop exercise, the specific result is a 435 piece tile artwork inspired by the pupils and in which each child could identify his/her tile.

Thinking outside the enclosure!
