Multiple Dimensions

Creekside based David Cameron and Toby Hadden who formed the highly innovative ‘&made’ in 2005 have been described thus: - “‘&made’ is an award-winning studio, working in product, furniture and spatial design. With an extensive knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes and a background of new technologies and engineering, &made demonstrate a unique creative process with a commitment to conscious design”.

The more one considers their body of work, the more you realise this is a relatively prosaic description for an outfit that constantly surprises.

They’ve been applauded by that guru of the establishment, the man who, via Habitat, changed the way the British furnished their lives.

“More than ever before designers have the responsibility to respond to the very serious issues affecting our world today… it is fantastic to see talented designers such as ‘&made’ doing just this through their work”

Sir Terence Conran
Independent Magazine

What rapidly becomes apparent is ‘&made’ aren’t just being careful to use sustainable locally sourced materials, but also possess imaginations that unite the practical and the ‘philosophical’ to make serious environmental points.

Witness ‘Either Oar’ which is, initially, categorised as a ‘contemporary dining table’.

But then the work’s role expands:

“Either Oar provides a sturdy and buoyant life raft with removable legs that convert into oars. Addressing the issues of climate change, the table hints at its secondary function as a raft through the detailing of the oars and seafaring fittings, aiming to bring to conversation the issues of climate change.”

‘Either Oar’ has been exhibited at the Design Museum, London and at Paul Smith’s HQ in Milan. No doubt it will come in handy if Deptford Creek floods.

‘&made’ also provide serious solutions to pressures on space – ‘Spair’, which when not in use, “can be stored on the wall as a flat graphics tableau, but when seating is needed its light and simple construction creates a folding chair for any occasion”.

Perhaps most challenging is the public installation displayed locally for eighteen months. 'The Deptford Gaff' which, to quote, 'Via a periscope enables the user to experience Deptford from an alternative viewpoint which provides the opportunity to track on the changes that occur during the planned regeneration of the area.'

Manifest talent, warmed by touches of wit and elevated by a serious concern with the issues of today – work that draws unique strength from several dimensions.
